Teeth Whitening
Davis CA

When your once bright white smile suddenly becomes dull and dingy, you take notice. You might be fairly certain that others have, too. It’s enough to make you want to stay out of the public eye, which is rather difficult to do these days with the rise of social media. The doctors at Davis Dental Practice understand your concerns and are ready to help solve your discoloration woes with teeth whitening options.

Causes of Discoloration

There is no single cause for stained teeth. In fact, you may even be surprised to learn that your discolored teeth are the result of several factors:
•  Food and drink. Dark colored foods and drinks, such as dark berries, coffee or red wine, are all culprits. They contain pigments that attach themselves to the hard, outer surface of your teeth known as enamel.
•  Smoking. Not just smoking, but tobacco products in general. All tobacco products contain tar and nicotine (along with well over a hundred other harmful chemicals). Tar is already dark. Nicotine, however, is clear until it mixes with oxygen. Both of these substances can penetrate the enamel of your teeth.
•  Medication. Certain types of medication, such as those for asthma or high blood pressure, can lead to stains deep within your teeth. Others, like tetracycline, discolor developing permanent teeth, which make them especially harmful for young children. Even unborn babies are at risk for developing discolored permanent teeth if the mother uses tetracycline, and medications like it while pregnant.
•  Your age. Believe it or not, getting older often brings yellower teeth, even if you have taken proper care of your teeth your entire life. This is due simply to the fact that your teeth wear over time, and the enamel becomes thinner, which allows the darker dentin layer beneath to show through

Can’t I Whiten at Home?

Certainly. There are plenty of products available on the market today to help whiten your teeth. Whitening toothpastes are specially formulated with abrasives that help the bristles of your toothbrush to scrub off surface stains. Or, you may choose to go with whitening strips, which contain low levels of bleaching agents to help penetrate more difficult stains. These products can take a while, however, to see the full results you’re looking for.
