What a Tongue Piercing Can Do to Your TeethSome people prefer to have oral piercings accentuate their teeth and smile. While this is not for everyone, if you are considering this type of piercing, you should be aware of what a tongue piercing can do to your teeth. Many patients do not consider the long-term effects of metal in their tongue.

Tongue Piercing and Your Teeth


If you get your tongue pierced, you are choosing to place a piece of foreign metal permanently in your mouth. This metal can cause problems. It may not be obvious, but jewelry in your mouth provides a new place for bacteria congregate. Is difficult to brush around the stud in your tongue. Oftentimes, we see bacteria increase overtime around the stud. If bacteria build up, you can expect others to smell your stinky breath as the bacteria overpowers your mouth.
Your teeth can be in danger if you choose to pierce your tongue. The stud in your mouth can damage existing dental work. We see patients who have knocked out fillings, displaced crowns, and damaged their braces due to oral jewelry.

It is also likely that your tongue piercing could cause a gap between your two front teeth. While this is not all that common, it is a possible outcome if you pierce your tongue.

Lastly, having your tongue pieced can change your oral habits. Perhaps your form a new habitat of running your tongue jewelry against your teeth. You might like the sound of it at first, but you may also unknowingly wear away the enamel of your teeth.
