Is Digital Radiography Better Than Traditional X-rays?

Posted on 6/7/2021 by Dagon Jones DDS
Is Digital Radiography Better Than Traditional X-rays?Digital radiography, also known as digital x-rays, is a dental technology that uses digital sensors to take dental images. The main difference between digital radiography and traditional x-rays is that the former does not use photographic films; however, it also provides a host of benefits over regular x-ray technology.

Benefits of Digital Radiography

Some of the major benefits of digital radiography are given below:

Digital X-rays Have Better Image Quality

Traditional x-rays only produce a standard-size image which can make it difficult to diagnose small or partially hidden oral conditions. Digital radiographs, on the other hand, can be viewed on a computer screen and can be zoomed in or panned out so that we can better study the condition.

In addition, digital x-rays also allow you to adjust the brightness, color, and contrast of the images so that you can see oral issues like lesions and small cavities easily.

Digital Radiographs Emit Less Radiation

Digital radiography devices are equipped with sensor plates that are highly sensitive to radiation. Hence, digital radiography involves lower levels of radiation. In some cases, the radiation level is 70 to 90 percent lower.

Even though traditional x-rays are quite safe, digital x-rays are even better and may be safely used on babies and pregnant women.

Digital X-rays Can Be Stored and Transferred Electronically

Digital radiographs are stored on computer databases and cloud storage and take relatively little space. This means you do not need to invest in large spaces to store the x-rays, saving you space and time. In addition, you can easily transfer dental records via email or other electronic means and share the x-rays with your patients and other dentists.

In time, we think that digital radiographs may eliminate the need for physical x-rays altogether.

Digital X-rays Are Eco-Friendly

Traditional x-rays are developed on chemical films that emit toxic fumes and are hazardous to people who come in contact with them. Digital x-rays are not developed on these films but are projected on the computer screen, which eliminates the need for proper disposal of lead foil and other toxic chemicals.
Hence, digital x-rays are more environment-friendly.

At Davis Dental Practice, Our doctors and our doctors may recommend the use of digital x-rays when examining your mouth. However, we make sure we only take x-rays when it is absolutely necessary and consider your age, risk of disease, and other factors as well.
