Prevention of Dry Mouth While Sleeping

Prevention of Dry Mouth While SleepingHave you ever woken up in the middle of the night with your mouth feeling all dry and parched? Or, do you feel this strong urge to drink a lot of water as soon as you wake up in the morning?

If yes, these are signs that you have dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, a dental health condition in which the salivary glands in the mouth are unable to produce enough saliva to help keep your mouth and tongue wet.

Waking up at odd hours in the night due to dry mouth is extremely frustrating and uncomfortable, to say the least. This is why it is important for you to take measures to prevent dry mouth while sleeping.

Here are a few things that you can do.

•  Use a fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth before going to bed.
•  Avoid eating spicy or acidic foods, especially before going to sleep.
•  Limit your alcohol intake if you tend to consume it regularly.
•  Make use of products that are specially designed for dry mouth, such as dry mouth oral rinse and moisturizing spray.
•  Chew sugar-free gum during the day to increase the production of saliva in the mouth.
•  Drink plenty of water throughout the day in order to stay hydrated during the night.

Complications of Untreated Dry Mouth

If you suffer from dry mouth, you should know that if it is left untreated, it can lead to a host of problems such as mouth sores, cracked lips, yeast infection of the mouth, tooth decay, gum disease, sores in and around the mouth, and split skin in the mouth.
