Keeping up on good oral hygiene defiantly includes making sure you change out your toothbrush and how to store it so you don't run the risk of bacteria growing on it. You've probably been encouraged by your dentist to brush at least twice a day for two minutes, and floss once a day to make sure you're getting rid of plaques and bacteria.

We've probably reminded you to change out your toothbrush every three months also. So why would you need to change it out any sooner? Here are some reasons why.

When Should You Change Out Your Toothbrush

It's a good idea to do a quick exam of your toothbrush every time you go to use it. You want to make sure the bristles don't look frayed. A worn out toothbrush isn't really going to get to all those hard to reach places.

It may not do a good job at removing plaque and bacteria at all. Making sure you store it with the brush head up, and away from places that are prone to bacteria growth are important since you will be putting it in your mouth to clean your teeth and gums.

Storing it properly, allowing it to dry out is the best way to get it clean. If you've been sick, you will want to replace your toothbrush. Getting rid of germs as soon as possible is the best way to prevent spreading them. You may not get sick again, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

We want to make sure you're getting the job done, so brushing with a worn-out toothbrush may not be doing anything at all. If you have a hard time keeping track of how long it's been you may want to write the date on your toothbrush with a permanent marker.

You can switch it out half way between your six-month cleanings or even plan on the first day of the new season. Whatever helps you to remember. If you have an aggressive brushing style it may need to be changed more frequently.

This may be more common with children, so it's extra important to keep an eye on theirs also. Everyone has a different set of teeth and require different attention, so continue to schedule regular visits with us for cleanings and exams.

We can recommend a good brush to use or how to switch up how you're brushing to get the best results. Give us a call today, we look forward to seeing you.
