Should You Be Concerned About an Expiration Date on Your Toothpaste?
Posted on 7/8/2019 by Office
You may not know it, but your toothpaste has an expiration date on the box. Fortunately, using toothpaste after its expiration date isn't harmful and won't damage your health. However, it won't be as beneficial after that date. Read on to find out why.
Why Does Toothpaste Have an Expiration Date?
The main reason that expiration dates are printed on toothpaste boxes is because of the fluoride. Fluoride is the active ingredient of toothpaste that strengthens the enamel and fights cavities. Researchers have found that over time, fluoride can degrade, and that will make it less effective at protecting your teeth.
Protecting the enamel with fluoride is extremely important. Once the enamel wears down, it cannot grow back. That's why you should always use toothpaste before its date of expiration.
Do You Even Need to Use Toothpaste?
Now that you know that toothpaste can expire, you may wonder if you really even need to use toothpaste at all. If you are in a bind, you can certainly brush your teeth without toothpaste, as it is the actual brushing motion that removes plaque and cleans the teeth.
However, we always recommend toothpaste because it contains fluoride and other ingredients that might improve your dental health. If you have sensitive teeth, you can choose an anti-sensitivity toothpaste that will make your teeth less sensitive. Some options have abrasives that help to better remove the buildup of plaque and food particles. Other varieties may include peroxide and scrubbing agents to help remove surface stains and to keep the teeth white.
Brushing your teeth is a main component of a good oral hygiene routine, but it isn't the only task of importance. You also need to see us regularly for your dental cleanings and checkups. Please call our office today to set up your next appointment.
