Why Teeth Getting Veneers Require Trimming First in Most Cases

Veneers are small porcelain shells that are attached to the front of your existing teeth. They look like real teeth from the front, but they're not actually replacement teeth.
They are simply there for cosmetic appearances. They can be perfect for those who have worn down or broken teeth and want to hide that imperfection until they can have the teeth removed and replaced with implants.
How Are Veneers Installed?
Dental veneers are installed by attaching the shell to the front of the tooth. While these shells are incredibly thin, however, attaching them directly to the front of a tooth would add additional thickness to that tooth. While it may not seem like a significant amount of extra thickness, it actually can impact your speech and your bite.
Trimming the Teeth
Instead of attaching the veneers directly to your teeth, then, we have to first remove a small amount of the enamel. This makes the veneers look more natural and doesn't impact how you bite into anything. The process is fairly painless, but it does leave the teeth without as much protection.
In some cases, this does mean removing strong, healthy enamel. In other cases, we may need to remove decaying parts of the teeth. Attaching a veneer to any part of the tooth that is decaying could cause the veneer to fall off later.
It's important to note that veneers are permanent. If one falls off, it must be replaced. The loss of the enamel on the tooth leaves it too vulnerable to damage otherwise.
