Does Exercise Help Improve the Health of Your Mouth Too?

Being physically active is one of the best things you can do for your health. Whether it's taking a daily walk, going to the gym, or playing sports, the act of moving your body and exerting yourself has incredible benefits.
It is widely believed that being active can reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity, but does exercise help improve the health of your mouth too? In 2004, the British Dental Journal published a study linking physical activity with oral health.
How Can Exercise Help Prevent Periodontal Disease
The study reported that regular exercise reduces the risk of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, a condition in which the gum tissue is harmed by the bacteria in your mouth. This can be not only painful, but it can lead to more problems if you don't take care of it.
Researchers found that 54-percent of people who exercised regularly and were non-smokers, are less likely to have gum disease, compared to those who didn't have an active lifestyle.
Exercise reduces inflammation in your body, including your mouth and if you have gum disease you can also be at risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Working Out Can Make Your Teeth Stronger
Scientific research has found out that exercise improves your digestive system, by improving bowel movements and circulation throughout the body. If you have a healthy digestive system you will be more resistant to infections and this can help your body fight infections with the vitamins and minerals found in your body naturally.
The link between oral health and overall health has been well documented and we want you to come to the office and see us regularly. Exercise helps to improve the health of your mouth too, and if you incorporate it in your schedule, your next visit could be a smoother one, so get moving!
