How Often Should You Sanitize Your Toothbrush?

Posted on 3/5/2018 by Dagon Jones DDS
Toothbrush Davis Dental Practice CA 95618-7760Some people sanitize their toothbrush after every use, they put their toothbrush in mouthwash for 10-15 minutes, and then they let if air dry, but it is not necessary to sanitize it every day.

Sanitizing your toothbrush is a personal choice, it's not recommended. Some people go months without sanitizing their toothbrush and simply dispose of it and buy a new one. There does not appear to be any health benefit to sanitizing your own toothbrush. A damp toothbrush does provide an area for some bacteria to grow, however, your mouth is a much better environment for bacteria growth and the same bacteria on your toothbrush are the same ones growing much more rapidly in your mouth.

Can You Sanitize Your Toothbrush To Much?

If you sanitize your toothbrush to much it could possibly damage the bristles causing them to wear out quicker. If you choose to sanitize your toothbrush, it might be best to do it once a month so it won't damage the toothbrush.

Storing and cleaning your toothbrush

A simple rinse in hot water after brushing is adequate. Store the brush in an environment where it can air dry. Some toothbrushes have a covered sanitation chamber that uses UV light to sanitize the brush, these work fine as well.
It is best to avoid having all the toothbrushes of a household closely packed together as this could be a way for bacterial transfer between individuals. This is especially important when a member of the household has a cold or flu. Overall, sanitizing your own toothbrush seems to have little benefit, but does not seem to cause much harm. So if you like to do it, go for it. But there is no need to worry about it or go overboard. It is more important to not share toothbrushes between individuals or let the bristles of other peoples' touch yours.
