Your Cavities Can Pass Bacteria to OthersCavities can lead to some major dental problems if they are not treated properly. That is why we encourage patients to seek immediate attention when they have dental decay. When the acids in your mouth demineralize your teeth, they also can cause infection or other oral problems. If you do not have a cavity treated immediately, you can end up having serious dental issues. The following information will help you see why treating decay is imperative.

How Cavities Can Cause Problems

When a cavity remains in the mouth untreated, the resulting decay and bacteria and trigger an infectious chain of events. In fact, one study revealed that tooth decay is one of the most infectious diseases orally. Not only can you spread the bacteria formed from cavities by sneezing or kissing, bacteria can spread when you share food or eating utensils. Mothers who have cavities often pass on their cavities to their children in this regard.

How to Prevent the Spread of Infectious Bacteria

You need to visit our office at least every six months to ensure that you and your children are protected from cavities. Schedule a dental exam and check-up, making sure that everyone in your family is screened for tooth decay. Don't avoid contacting our office until you feel pain. By having regular cleanings twice, a year and following a routine program of dental care at home, you can significantly reduce the level of bacteria in the mouth. It also helps to use an anti-bacterial mouthwash – one that contains the ingredient chlorhexidine. Chewing sugar-free gum also prevents bad bacteria.

Remember not to share eating utensils or foods with your kids too much. Always cover your mouth when you sneeze and teach your kids to do the same. Make it a point to see us twice a year and brush and floss daily, to prevent the spread of cavities and bad bacteria.
