Options When You Get Nervous at the Dentist

If you are one who is prone to get nervous at the dentist, you need to have a game-plan when you go in. The more prepared you are, the less likely you are to get so nervous that you either leave or struggle through a procedure unnecessarily.

Figure out what you need to have done, do a little research on it, and figure out what will help you remain calm. That way, when you are in the dentist's chair, you are prepared to remain focused on your oral health.

Calming Yourself Before a Procedure

The first thing to do is arm yourself with information. Find out what procedures you need, then read up on them. When you know what to expect, it can help keep you from jumping due to the unknown.

Next, focus on your breathing. This can help alleviate stress and fear when you are struggling at the dentist's office. Count slowly to five or ten while you inhale, and do the same as you exhale. Flood your body with oxygen to help keep you relaxed.

Finally, bring along some music or an audio book to distract yourself. The more you can focus on the songs or the book being read, the less likely you are to focus on what the dentist is doing. Bring along songs that you can lose yourself in without dancing, though, as you don't want to start bee-bopping in the middle of a filling or root canal.

If none of these work, talk with your dentist about what options he or she may have to calm you during a procedure. There is no reason to feel any anxiety or pain when going through a dental procedure anymore. Just take the time to find out your options, then go from there to get your mouth taken care of.

Please contact our office if you have any questions about your oral health.
