Implants and Their Longevity

Posted on 7/15/2026 by Davis Dental Practice
A dentist with an educational model of dental implants shares the benefits of implants with a patient.Let's talk about dental implants. You may have heard about them, or maybe you’re considering one. It's a big decision! Understanding how long they last is key to feeling confident in that decision. So, let's dive into the factors that affect the lifespan of these amazing tooth replacements.

What Exactly is a Dental Implant?

First, it’s good to know what a dental implant actually is. It's essentially a small, strong post, usually made of titanium, that is surgically placed into your jawbone. This post acts like the root of your missing tooth. After the implant fuses with your bone (a process called osseointegration), a replacement tooth, called a crown, is attached to it. The result? A tooth that looks, feels, and functions much like your natural tooth.

Factors Influencing Implant Lifespan

Many things affect how long your implant will last. It's not a "one size fits all" situation. Here are some of the most important factors:

•  Oral Hygiene: This is HUGE. Just like natural teeth, implants need to be kept clean. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using interdental brushes are essential. Poor oral hygiene can lead to peri-implantitis, an infection that can damage the bone supporting the implant and eventually cause it to fail.
•  Regular Dental Visits: Don't skip your check-ups! Your dentist can spot potential problems early on, like signs of peri-implantitis or issues with the crown. Regular professional cleanings are also important for removing plaque and tartar that you might miss at home.
•  Bone Density: The implant needs a strong foundation. If your jawbone isn't dense enough, the implant might not integrate properly or might become loose over time. Bone grafting procedures can sometimes be done to improve bone density before implant placement.
•  Lifestyle Choices: Smoking is a major enemy of dental implants. It can hinder the healing process after surgery and increase the risk of infection. Certain medical conditions, like uncontrolled diabetes, can also affect implant success.
•  Implant Location: Implants in the back of your mouth, like molars, tend to experience more chewing force than implants in the front. This increased force can potentially shorten their lifespan.
•  Clenching and Grinding: If you clench or grind your teeth (bruxism), you put extra stress on your implants. Wearing a nightguard can help protect your implants from this added pressure.

How Long Can You Expect an Implant to Last?

With proper care, dental implants can last for many years, even a lifetime. Studies show that many implants last 20-30 years or longer. The crown, the visible part of the replacement tooth, may need to be replaced every 10-15 years due to normal wear and tear.

Taking Care of Your Investment

Think of your dental implant as an investment in your health and well-being. By following your dentist's instructions for oral hygiene, attending regular check-ups, and making healthy lifestyle choices, you can significantly increase the chances of your implant lasting a very long time.

If you are considering dental implants, talk to your dentist about your specific situation and what you can do to ensure the long-term success of your implant.
