I Have Acid Reflux. How Could That Affect My Teeth?

A woman drinking a glass of waterIf you have a burning sensation in the back of your throat, you may be one of the 20 percent of children or adults who have acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If you have acid reflux, you need to make sure you are treating it because it can have serious implications for your teeth and gums.

What Exactly Is Acid Reflux?

Your stomach has acid in it to break apart food into its essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. In most people, the acid stays in your stomach where it belongs. However, when you have acid reflux, the acid in your stomach works its way back up your esophageal tube and into your mouth. Acid reflux can cause issues for your teeth, gums, lungs, and esophagus.

Issues With Acid Reflux

The acids in your gastric juices can damage your esophageal tube, which can lead to surgery. As for your teeth and gums, stomach acid wears away the enamel of your teeth, which can make it easier to have cavities and gum disease. In fact, acid reflux can damage your teeth so much that you may need to have veneers to cover your teeth since the enamel has worn away.

What Should I Do?

If you suspect you have acid reflux, there are some things you can do. First, you may want to keep track of how often you have acid reflux and if some foods tend to trigger your acid reflux, such as tomato-based products, fried food, or beef. Second, be sure that you discuss your concerns with your doctor, as you may need to start taking medicine to fight your acid reflux.

Our dentist needs to know as well, because they need to keep a check on the enamel in your teeth and gums. That way, they can let you know if they see signs of enamel damage as well as damage to your gums or the back of your throat. Looking for a dentist to talk to about your concerns in your mouth?
