Protecting Your Teeth When You Vomit

Posted on 10/30/2018 by Office
Protecting Your Teeth When You VomitSometimes there is nothing to do but empty the contents of your stomach through your mouth. Vomiting is one of the most unpleasant things that can happen, and it doesn't only leave a bad taste in your mouth, but it can damage your teeth.

One of our primary goals is to reduce the side effects of acid in the mouth because this can lead to increased plaque production. Plaque is that substance that sticks to your teeth and can cause cavities when it's not monitored with regular cleanings in our office.

Why is Vomit Bad for Your Oral Health?

Pregnant women who suffer from morning sickness know this all too well. Stomach acids from vomiting can cause tremendous damage to your teeth because of how corrosive they are when in direct contact with enamel, the outer layer of the tooth.

You can take some steps to protect your teeth when you vomit. Rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash after vomiting to reduce the acidic effects.

Wait to brush your teeth. As tempting as it may be to get that foul taste out of your mouth, one of the worst things you can do after vomiting is to brush your teeth. You may be doing more harm than good if you clean them right away because the teeth are weakened by the direct contact with acids and brushing will only hurt. Some toothpaste contains abrasives which also damage teeth, so hold off brushing for about 30-minutes.

Stomach acids in the mouth from vomit or reflux can create serious problems for your oral health. If you cannot stand the taste, you can use a soft, damp cloth and clean your mouth gently as much as you can. Keep rinsing with water.

If you have concerns about protecting your teeth when you vomit, please give us a call and we will be happy to help you.
